[00:00:01] For those of you who don't know me, I'm Sarah Berger, and I help lead our campus here at Columbia Station. I just want to say what an honor it is here to be with you today. And I want to pray to get us started. [00:00:16] Thank you for being our God. [00:00:21] Thank you for calling us by name. [00:00:26] Thank you for giving us a purpose in this broken world. [00:00:30] And, Father, I pray today for every heart here, every heart listening, whenever and wherever, that your name will be glorified in our lives, that we will not take for granted the sacrifice that you made. And the aroma that is a lasting aroma that just permeates me. Father, I pray today that none of this is empty, but you fill this space. [00:00:59] That your presence goes before us, Father, and that your name will be known in this world. [00:01:06] In your mighty and awesome son's name, we pray. Amen. [00:01:10] Oh, I'm a crybaby. So get ready. [00:01:16] It's Mother's Day. So I thought, what better way to introduce this sermon than to honor my mama a little bit? You get to see my dad week in, week out. But this is my gorgeous, lovely, fierce, gentle, amazing mom and church. We get to see publicly who they are, but my whole life, I got to see private, privately, who they were. [00:01:48] My mom was a woman of strength, and she's here, and I didn't quite know she was going to be here, so now I'm probably going to cry more. [00:01:56] And she was a blessing to my life that I don't think I'll ever be able to repay. [00:02:01] Many of you know my story that I was a teenage mom, and during that time, I lost all my friends. I was lonely, and it was this transitional time in my life, because those moments can either break you or. Or they can make you. [00:02:16] And because of the love and the friendship that my mom offered me, I get to stand up here and be the woman that I am today. [00:02:28] I was thinking all week God was, like, slowing me down just to remember the faithfulness and the goodness of who he was. [00:02:36] I was a junior in high school, and I had saved money to buy a prom dress because at Buckeye, it was like junior prom. [00:02:44] And I had been voted on prom court. Okay? [00:02:50] So this wasn't any prom. It was a special prom to me, and I had saved money, and I went to this consignment shop where you could buy dresses that women sold to the consignment shop. And in my head, I had this vision of a red strapless dress. Okay? I had the vision for it. Church I could see and I Found a dress that was close. [00:03:12] It had sleeves, it was satin, it was red. It was close enough. So I thought, okay, I'm going to work with them and they can help me make this dress a strapless dress. Well, the week of prom, through a series of events, the dress was ruined. [00:03:26] And I had no red strapless dress to wear to prom. [00:03:31] And I remember my mom finding out and her picking me up from school and driving me to. Not a thrift shop, okay, but to Dillard's, okay. That might as well have been Chanel Church. [00:03:46] And my mom bought me the most beautiful red dress. [00:03:53] Okay? I had no eyebrows, I had braces, so your girl wouldn't smile. But I felt like a beautiful girl that night. [00:04:04] See, my mom sacrificed. And I know she sacrificed. [00:04:08] If it was between us and her, she would always choose us. [00:04:13] And I grew up in a home of faith that mom and dad, they had a vision for what God wanted in this world. [00:04:22] And although they couldn't see it, they felt it, they believed in it, and they saw sacrificed for it. [00:04:30] Many of you will never know all that they did. And I'm just gonna brag on them a little bit. Cause I'm up here. [00:04:37] And when we made a campaign to get in this building, mom and Dad, I think, were in their early 50s. [00:04:47] And they had a home they loved. [00:04:50] They had a home that felt like it was a gift from God. [00:04:55] But because they believed so deeply in who Jesus Christ was and what he wanted to do in this world, they sold that home so that they could give some money to help build this building. [00:05:09] Their sacrifice, it was costly. [00:05:13] But if you ask them today, it wasn't annoying, it wasn't a hassle. [00:05:24] It's been the honor and the privilege of their life to love their kids and this church with all that they are. [00:05:32] Something happens when you are touched by God. [00:05:37] Something happens when you know the richness of his love, not just for others, but you personally. [00:05:44] That something inside of you, it breaks wide open. And you are willing to do things and sacrifice and give, not out of duty or obligation, but because your heart desires to show God a gratitude and a love that nothing and no one can truly comprehend. [00:06:03] And all week I've been sitting in Hebrews 12. And it says, therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely. [00:06:19] And let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and the perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and he's seated at the right hand of the throne of God. [00:06:39] Because I was raised in a home where sacrifice and faith wasn't just something we talked about on Sundays, but it permeated every ounce of our life. [00:06:49] I just claim Hebrews for all of us today because we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. [00:06:59] I want us to throw off everything that hinders us. [00:07:03] Every thought that wants to slow you or keep you stuck in the shame. [00:07:08] Every dumb decision that you ever made that you replay over and over and over again. [00:07:15] Everything that when we're looking for love or we're looking for hope and we go to all the wrong things, I want to throw it all away. [00:07:24] And I want us to run the race that is set out before us. [00:07:28] But I don't want to just run the race. I want to keep our eyes on Jesus Christ. I want to keep our eyes on the author and the perfecter and the founder of our faith church. As I was preparing for this sermon, I must have changed it 150 times up until this morning. [00:07:48] Because what I realize is that sacrifice and tithe and giving, it's all over the scripture. [00:07:58] There's something in what God wants to do in us that when we sacrifice, he's blessed by it. [00:08:11] And there's no better story of this than a woman named Mary. [00:08:18] Her story shows up three times for sure, in the Gospel and possibly one other time. Scholars debate if it's her or if it's another Mary. [00:08:27] So in four times in the Gospels, you will see a story of this. [00:08:32] And in Mark, you see this woman do something to show her love and devotion for Jesus Christ. [00:08:42] Mary had a sister named Martha and a brother named Lazarus. They were best friends with Jesus. He would often come and stay with them in Bethany. And Martha would cook lovely dinners. But here's what I love. My girl Mary, she was no good in the kitchen. [00:08:58] Any mamas out there? Give me an amen, okay? She was no good in the kitchen because Mary, her heart was for something different. [00:09:08] Her heart was always to be in the presence of Jesus. [00:09:14] See, to Mary, he changed her life. [00:09:17] To Mary, once she knew him and believed in him, there was no going back. [00:09:23] Normal life. [00:09:25] And when she had the opportunities to sit at the feet of Jesus, she would break through every barrier and every societal norm because women were not supposed to be in the room with men. [00:09:39] But Mary didn't care. Can I get an amen? [00:09:44] She did not care. [00:09:47] And in this setting, it's just a Couple days before Passover. [00:09:53] It's a couple days before Jesus will give his life. [00:09:58] And I'm not 100% sure if she knows that or not, but on this day, in this one life, she got. [00:10:08] She wanted to show her. Show him an authentication pure and a beautiful sacrifice to Jesus. [00:10:22] So on this day, she walks into this room and all the men are reclining at the table. [00:10:31] And in her hand she has an alabaster jar. [00:10:36] And her eyes were not on the people in the room, but her eyes were on Jesus Christ. Christ. [00:10:43] She had a history with Jesus. [00:10:47] She had a history at sitting at his feet and people mocking her or being mean to her. And Jesus saying, no, no, no. She chose what is good. [00:10:57] She chose what is pleasing to me. [00:11:01] And so with faith, she walks in this room. But as I think about her history with Jesus, I think about our church's history, and I think to myself, christ. Church has a history with Jesus. [00:11:15] Christ. Church has a history of faith, of knowing him and of following him. [00:11:21] Church, you can walk in this building and if you didn't know the men and women and the sacrifice they made to get us here, it's easy to take it for granted. [00:11:32] It's easy to walk in this space and see something of the goodness of God, but not really know. [00:11:38] And I never want to take it for granted because we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. [00:11:46] You see, church is not built on the talent of few, but on the sacrifice of many. [00:11:52] And hundreds of men and women have led in this church. They've reorganized their life to make Jesus Christ the center of it. They've reorganized their finances to give so that they can show a love and devotion to Him. [00:12:08] They reorganized their lives because they believed it mattered. [00:12:13] They were willing to do what seemed like the impossible because this church wasn't always here. It started out as 25 people in Parma. [00:12:25] And then we grew and we moved to Strongsville and it was a couple hundred. And then we outgrew that building and we moved into the high school. [00:12:35] And the sacrifice that it took to do church and bring supplies and love kids and honor God in that space, it was a challenge. [00:12:46] They trusted God. [00:12:50] They reorganized their weekends. [00:12:53] They served him faithfully because they loved him. [00:13:00] And while this was all a dream of what possibly could be church, it was never about a building. [00:13:08] For 43 years, we have faithfully followed God. Not because of a building, not because of a logo, not because of a location, but for the name and the glory and the honor of Jesus Christ. [00:13:21] Go ahead, let's clap it out. [00:13:26] And I want to stand here today and say thank you to those who went before us. [00:13:32] I do not take it for granted. [00:13:35] I do not waste has changed the trajectory of my life, of my husband's life, of my three children's life. And in Jesus name I pray my grandkids lives. [00:13:51] Church, they surrounded us. They believed without seeing, without knowing. They gave so beautifully. We have a history and a faithfulness of God. And I thank you, I thank you with all of my heart to those of you who have served and loved and changed the game for this church. Thank you, Christchurch. [00:14:13] But here's what I know. [00:14:17] I believe with all of my heart that our history gives us faith. [00:14:23] Our history gives us a faith that we can see man, the goodness of God is real. [00:14:30] When he wants to accomplish something in the world, he doesn't just snap his finger, but in his glory and in his beauty and for reasons I'll never understand, he invites us into the adventure of faith. He partners with us broken, crazy, messed up people. [00:14:46] Can I get an amen? Okay. Am I the only. [00:14:54] When Mary walked in holding that alabaster jar, the Bible tells us that she broke it open. [00:15:05] Once you break it open, there's no going back. [00:15:09] And Mark wanted to make a point of how costly this sacrifice was. [00:15:17] A couple times in this chapter, he says this is costly, that this jar, it would have been about 300 denarii and that really would be one year's wages. [00:15:29] And a lot of scholars believe it was like a dowry for her wedding. [00:15:35] And for her to break open that jar, it would have lessened her chances for a future. [00:15:42] And as she broke open that jar and went up to Jesus, she poured it all over his head. [00:15:51] Imagine it running over his face, into his beard. [00:15:57] Imagine it soaking through his clothes. [00:16:03] She puts it on his feet. [00:16:08] And some people in the room got really annoyed. [00:16:14] Some people in the room got angry and indignant and they said to her, why would you waste that? [00:16:24] Why would you waste that? We could have sold it and we could have given it to the poor. [00:16:30] But Church, what I want to tell you today, that was not a waste to Mary, to Mary, it was worth it. [00:16:39] To Mary, it was worship. [00:16:43] To Mary, in the one life that she got, it was an opportunity for her to show her love and devotion to Jesus Christ. [00:16:51] And when she broke open that jar, I believe she was breaking open something in her heart to just show him how worthy of everything that he is. [00:17:01] And Church, as I think about her breaking open that jar, I think God wants to break through some things. In this church. [00:17:09] I believe he wants to break wide open possibilities for the future. [00:17:16] I believe that he wants to break open things that have kept us stuck, things that have hindered us brokennesses that we've lived in too long. I think he wants to break it wide open today. [00:17:29] I believe with all of my heart that as we go on this adventure of faith with God, he is going to do the impossible again. [00:17:39] You see, I believe that our history gives us faith, but our future gives us a hope. [00:17:46] I believe that as we take on these adventures of faith with God, that he works inside of us to kind of just change. Change the world around us. [00:17:57] I was working at West Campus four or five years ago, so six years ago. [00:18:04] And we had. [00:18:06] We had just been believing in God. [00:18:10] And actually we would show up on a Sunday, and there'd be like 200 people, and we'd be like, what's going on? We believe so much in God. We were like, did people not know the address? Like, what's happening? [00:18:19] But God faithfully grew that campus, and Chet and I would seek God with all our heart, and we outgrew the campus, and there was nowhere to go. And if you've ever been to West Campus, you know, we've done everything we can to make that building work, and it does not work. [00:18:36] And so in 2018, we just started believing in God for a future for West Campus. [00:18:42] We started believing and trusting that God would do what he's done here at Columbia Station there in Elyria, in North Ridgeville, in Eaton Township. We believe that there were men and women who were lost and hopeless, and they needed a church in their neighborhood to give them a beacon of light. [00:19:00] And so we started meeting with Jeff Russell, who was a realtor, and he started showing us buildings, and Manchette and I would be discouraged. We'd walk into every building, and we'd be like, this is not it. [00:19:11] This is not it. [00:19:13] And we kind of ended the day, and we were discouraged. And we were driving down the highway, and Jeff Rustle said, you know what? There's a piece of property up here for sale. [00:19:21] And I think it's about 22 acres. [00:19:25] And we drove past the piece of property, and it's this wide open cornfield. [00:19:31] And we could not believe when we walked on that land. We were believing from God for the impossible, because that moment felt like a divine moment. [00:19:43] Later that year, we've got some pictures. Chet and his beautiful wife Allie. You know, this is a long time ago, because Pastor Beetler's got hair. Church. Okay. [00:19:56] His Beautiful wife, Allie, Angelson from heaven, that crazy guy, Jovan, that we all love. [00:20:02] We just, we walked the land and although it wasn't ours, we prayed and we walked and we'd show up on that land and we would just pray to God. We know there are people who are longing for you. [00:20:14] Will you help us? Will you help us get this property? [00:20:17] In 2019, my dad and my husband and Chet and I, we went to the land with an architect to see what would be possible. [00:20:27] And we prayed, believing in something that we just, you couldn't see it. [00:20:33] But because of faith, because what the future generations did before us, we believed it. [00:20:39] And then in 2020, when the impossible happened and everything spiked through the roof, we purchased that land for West Campus. [00:20:47] And now this summer, their hope is to break ground and start building that church. What you might not know is we are one church in three locations, but we are the hub Christchurch, this campus. We are the sending campus. That means when we start a new campus, the people that go have been developed, have been raised, have learned about the glory of God and how to lead and how to love because of you. [00:21:18] And we believe in the future that God wants us not just to do one or two or three campuses, but we can see in the future 10 Christchurch campuses around. [00:21:29] I want to say the US because I'm thinking a Hawaii campus sounds real nice, you know what I'm saying? [00:21:37] Christchurch, Hawaii. And my family might just have to sacrifice for the glory of God to go and start there. [00:21:46] Here's what I believe. Church that God wants to break open something in that campus. And as the Adventure of Faith campaign starts on June 1, what we're praying for is that in five years God will double us and that we will be a church of 5,000 people. But again, it's not a building. It is people's lives that we are praying for. It is the transformation and the healing of the broken. It's for people that have gifts that God has created them for. And so they start to use their gifts in church and they find a purpose and a mission for Jesus Christ. [00:22:21] I'm believing that God is going to break wide open the future for our next generation. [00:22:26] I believe that out of those 5,000 that we have 20 somethings and teenagers in here right now who are loving God with all they have. [00:22:36] Every week we try to do the best hour of the kids week and we put on ministry so that kids can worship God where they're at. [00:22:46] We believe with all our heart. God did something special that when I came over to West Campus. You know, in his goodness, he aligns the desires of our heart with his and that is his goodness. [00:22:59] And when I got here, I looked around and I said, man, I want to create something for our 20 somethings. I want to help this church grow young. [00:23:08] I want to help 20 somethings just trust and so and lead and follow him. [00:23:15] Little girl, we got you. Okay, mama. [00:23:19] We believe God's gonna do something awesome in your life. You hear me? Yeah. [00:23:25] Yeah. [00:23:26] Here's what we believe. We believe that the future generation is going to do incredible things with God. There is a move happening in the world that no one can explain except that Jesus Christ is on the move. [00:23:39] Bible sales for Gen Z. [00:23:43] Bible sales for Gen Z is higher than any other time. They're booming. [00:23:49] When I came over this campus, we were in a hard transition with our high school kids and we had about six kids in the ministry. And now the ministry, if you go up there any week, is normally about 100 kids. [00:23:59] God is doing something in the life. This summer we started CC midweek and we had all the college kids help us lead and help sing and worship and do ministry. And we were believing that college age kids could come on Wednesdays to hear the goodness of God. To see themselves not as a nuisance or not as a hassle, but to say, we believe in you. We believe what God's going to do in your life. We're trusting him. That no matter how bad you've messed up, no matter how small you feel, that he is better and bigger than all of it. [00:24:35] That there is nothing that can stop the love of God from working in your Life. [00:24:40] And these 20 somethings, we had a two day conference and 250, 20 something showed up. [00:24:46] And at the end of it, I think a picture was already showed. They all came forward to give their life to Jesus Christ. [00:24:54] And what happened is when some of them went back to college, they weren't content with just letting it stay here in this building and they took it back to their campuses. [00:25:04] Grace and Xander, I see you in the back. [00:25:06] Wave, wave, wave. [00:25:10] They went to Kent State and they said, we want to start something here for our generation. And they started a life group that meets every week and just helps encourage and do a Bible study and build up their generation for the glory of Jesus Christ. [00:25:31] We had a couple of guys who are Christ churchers and they did a worship night at Cleveland State and they just brought worship to their generation. I'm telling you, God wants to break open something big and church this adventure of faith. We've got to prepare for it. See, you can't just become a church of 5,000 overnight. [00:25:50] You can't just. We need leaders. [00:25:53] We need men and women who say, because I trust in God, because I know the value of what he says done for me, I want to give my life away in service to Him. [00:26:03] Some of you need to pray about stepping up and leading in this church and making a difference so that this church has a future and a hope. [00:26:11] I think that when we look at this 5,000 people, we're praying that a thousand people in the next five years will get baptized. [00:26:20] Because remember, baptism is this moment where you declare that Jesus Christ is your Lord and your Savior. [00:26:27] And we are believing that a thousand people will come to know him and believe in him and trust them with all their lives. [00:26:34] We are believing that in the next two years in this Adventure of Faith campaign that we'll be able to pay off the debt of this building. It's $1.5 million. Now here's the beauty. We're going to pay this off in 5 years no matter what, because the diligence of the people that run their finances. [00:26:51] But here's what we're hoping. That we can pay it off in two years so that ministry can fund flow. That if we, if we double in size, that we have a ministry that's vibrant and alive and we can break the ceilings of everything that hinders us. [00:27:07] And now I'm going to be crazy because we, we've handed out these pamphlets and they're on Main street if you want to know a little bit more about the Adventure of Faith. [00:27:16] What I'm praying for is not just that we pay off our debt here, but together with West Campus, we help them go debt free free into their building. [00:27:25] I am believing for God in an enormous amount of money. It's $4 million and over two years. It's insane. It's never happened in the history of our church. But church, it's only crazy until it happens. [00:27:38] It's only wild and unbelievable until you're walking in it and you're stepping with God and he's showing up. [00:27:44] My husband and I are praying about giving the biggest gift of our life because. [00:27:49] Because the grace and the beauty. [00:27:51] We're so affected by Jesus Christ. [00:27:56] We want our lives to be every single part for Him. [00:28:02] We want our worship to be his. We give up our evenings to meet with people. We give up our evenings to meet with marriages that are in trouble. [00:28:11] We lead the 20 somethings and help do Bible studies. And it's worth it. [00:28:16] Every ounce of it is worth it. Because I am believing for God in something that I cannot yet see. [00:28:23] But I know he is faithful. [00:28:25] And I know that when he aligns our hearts, there is nothing he cannot do. In this place, Mary dumped the jar. [00:28:38] And when I was studying the scripture, I had never noticed this before. [00:28:42] I'd never thought about it. [00:28:44] But the perfume, it was a pure nard. [00:28:49] It would have had to be imported from the Himalayan mountains. It would have been very, very expensive. But it was pure. [00:28:56] You see, our perfumes are made with, like an alcohol base. This would have been oil. [00:29:02] And when she broke open that jar, it was about 12 ounces, and she poured it over his head. [00:29:13] The smell not only filled the room, but it would have clung to Jesus. [00:29:21] Jacob and I were looking for clone for him a couple months back and we went to the store and we were like spraying all these things and have you ever just sprayed too much? [00:29:30] Okay, we sprayed too much and we went home. And I was like, babe, you are going to have to shower. Because the smell clung to him. [00:29:39] But Jesus, this would have been. [00:29:42] He would have been saturated in the oil. [00:29:48] And everywhere he went the next few days before he died, that oil, that scent would have been on him. [00:30:01] You see, Mary made a large sacrifice for Jesus that day. But I don't know if she really knew that he was going to make the biggest sacrifice for her of all times in just a few days time. [00:30:12] A sacrifice for every single one of us. [00:30:15] But here's what I thought about. I thought about when he went to the garden of Gethsemane and he prayed with his disciples and his best friend came and betrayed him and all ran and all fleet from him. [00:30:30] I wonder if the night breeze whifted through his hair and he smelt her sacrifice. [00:30:41] I wonder if when he went to the high priest, if he could still smell the scent coming off of his clothes, of her devotion to him. [00:30:54] When he stood in front of Pilate and everybody shouted, crucify him. Crucify him. I wonder if the smell from his beard made its way into his heart as those unworthy hands stood at the foot of the cross and cast lots for his clothes, the aroma of her sacrifice would still be there. [00:31:26] And church, what I'm telling you is we have a God who sacrificed everything for us. [00:31:32] We have a God who gave it all, who saved nothing because it was his honor and his privilege. Because he is our God and we are his people. [00:31:41] There is no religion on earth like it. [00:31:45] Don't be fooled. There is no other God that would have ever given their life for you. [00:31:51] There is only the name of Jesus Christ. [00:31:55] And as that aroma clung to him for the last days of his life, I think about how can our aroma of sacrifice cling to him eternally in heaven? [00:32:05] How can I pour out my life to give it all for him? Because not out of duty or guilt or obligation, but because he is so worthy and deserving of it all. [00:32:16] Jacob and I, we are seeking him in our life. And every time we've given, every time we've sacrificed our hours, every time we've loved our children like none of it has been wasted, it's always been worship. [00:32:33] It's always been an opportunity to love him and serve him faithfully. [00:32:39] And so, church, I call us, I call us to an adventure of faith. [00:32:46] Some of you maybe giving is not it for you yet. Some of you, you maybe just need to let the love and the aroma of Jesus Christ's sacrifice permeate your heart and soul. [00:33:00] Some of you just need to give him a chance and follow him instead, stick around and see what he does. [00:33:07] For some of you, you know him, you love him, you come to church. [00:33:12] But it's time to volunteer. [00:33:15] It's time to help us create a future that we can only dream and hope in. [00:33:21] For some of you, you've been coming, you serve, but it's time to tithe and give regularly and trust God with your finances. [00:33:29] And for others of us, because we've done all that, this is an opportunity to sacrifice. [00:33:40] It's an opportunity in this one life that we get. No other time in our life will it matter when we're dead? Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ isn't Lord. [00:33:51] It'll be different. [00:33:52] This is our time, our season of life where we get to show him what he means to us. [00:34:00] We get to show him that he is worthy in our sacrifices and opportunity just to give it all for him. [00:34:08] And so I call some of you to sacrifice and give bigger than you've ever gave in your entire life. [00:34:15] But not because we said so, not because you feel obligated or guilty, but because out of the pureness of your sacrifice. Sacrifice, you give to Jesus Christ. [00:34:27] You see, my husband and I, we give through the church, but we give to God. [00:34:32] It's who we give to. [00:34:34] And so I pray that you just prayerfully consider what is he worth to you and how can it evidence itself in you through you. [00:34:50] Let's pray. [00:34:53] Dear Heavenly Father, I love you. I thank you that we get the scripture. [00:34:58] I thank you that when Mary broke in and people were angry, that you looked at them and you said stop, that you said what she did was beautiful to you. And I thank you for this story. [00:35:12] I thank you that in 2025 we're still talking about her. [00:35:17] But Father, what I truly thank you for is your love, your grace. [00:35:21] I thank you that you exchanged our brokenness for your dignity, that you took our shame for your glory. Father, that we get. [00:35:31] And I pray that we will not waste it. [00:35:34] But I pray that the aroma of your life will touch ours, Father, and then in return, because you've worked so hard, powerfully, that we will let it flow in us first and then through us. Father, back to you. [00:35:47] I love you, I cherish you and I value you. Thank you for all you are. In your son's mighty name we pray. Amen.
